Nonini Wins Copyright Infringement Case Against Influencer Brian Mutinda

Kenyan musician Nonini, real name Hubert Nakitare, has won a legal battle against influencer Brian Mutinda for copyright infringement. The case began last year when Mutinda used Nonini’s hit song “We Kamu” in a video advert promoting Syinix’s latest television sets without permission.

The Milimani commercial magistrate court ruled in favor of Nonini, awarding him Sh1m in general damages for copyright infringement and directing Mutinda to remove the unauthorized video from his social media platforms.

Nonini celebrated his victory on social media, citing the importance of respecting copyright and setting a precedent for the Kenyan music industry. The ruling serves as a reminder to content creators to seek permission before using third-party intellectual property, as cautioned by entertainment and IP lawyer Liz Lenjo.
