Mother of Slain Maseno University Student Speaks

A grieving mother is speaking up after being misinformed of her son’s condition when he was admitted to the hospital. Everline Miruka’s son, William Mayenga, was a third-year student at Maseno University and had joined the Azimio la Umoja demonstrators on Monday when he was shot and killed by police. The mother said she was shocked to find out that her son had died after being told by the hospital that he was alive. Miruka also questioned why the police, who are supposed to protect the public, ended up killing her son. The governor of Kisumu, Anyang’ Nyong’o, has condemned the fatal shooting and called for the police officer responsible to be arrested and prosecuted. The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) and National Police Service (NPS) are conducting investigations into the incident.
