Daddy Owen vs. Anitah Raey: A Disappointing Debate on LGBTQ Rights

A recent debate on Kenyan TV between Daddy Owen and Anitah Raey regarding LGBTQ rights in Kenya left many viewers disappointed. Daddy Owen, a gospel artist and anti-LGBTQ advocate, argued that the Bible clearly condemns homosexuality and that allowing LGBTQ NGOs in Kenya opens the door for criminal activity. Meanwhile, Anitah Raey, a vocal liberal, argued that the opposition to LGBTQ rights is rooted in Western culture and that we should embrace a more inclusive society.
Unfortunately, the debate fell short of providing any real intellectual argument. Daddy Owen’s reliance on the Bible to argue against homosexuality was a moot point for those who do not follow religious beliefs. Meanwhile, Anitah Raey’s argument that opposition to LGBTQ rights is solely a result of Western culture ignores the complex social and political factors at play in Kenya.
The LGBTQ community in Kenya faces significant discrimination and persecution, and it is essential to have informed and constructive debates on the matter. However, this debate highlighted the lack of intellectual depth and nuance in public discourse on the topic.
Ultimately, the fight for LGBTQ rights in Kenya cannot be won by polarizing arguments and fallacious reasoning. It requires a thoughtful and empathetic approach to understanding the lived experiences of LGBTQ individuals in Kenya, as well as an acknowledgement of the complex social, cultural, and political factors that contribute to discrimination and marginalization.
As Kenyans, we must move beyond the simplistic arguments presented by Daddy Owen and Anitah Raey and engage in constructive dialogue and action to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.
